So here is what I thought, for some reason the installers did not put the boot loaders to the EFI partition but keep them in their root directory. One of them has the linux icon and boots into elementary directly. One of them loads into GRUB, where I can choose to boot into whatever I want again.

One of them boots into windows, with a windows icon. Now when I boot into refind, I have 4 options.
I did the same with elementary(15 gb) (without a seperate home partition) I told the installer to install the boot loader in the windows' efi partition. I used a seperate home partition, and mounted / (18 gb) and /home in different partitions.

I have installed windows 8.1 and left free space. I'm guessing its because I installed refind from windows, but from what I gather that should not make a difference) I set up the boot order from bios (there appears to be 2 windows entries in the list and one of them boots into windows and the other is refind. I wanted to have multiple operating systems, and boot into them using refind. I have windows 8.1, linux mint and elementary on my computer. So it looks like just the fact that I booted rEFInd from EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi makes it unable to boot Linux.I lurked this forum a lot to build my system, and now I have a problem I couldn't find a solution for.
